CYO Audition Requirements for the 2024-25 Season
Auditions for the 2024-25 season will take place in-person on June 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Applicants must fill out the Audition Form and sign up for an audition date and time.
Audition requirements for RETURNING APPLICANTS (including Academy and APP students):

*Please sign up for two consecutive slots for the audition. The audition will take place in the percussion room.*
Important Information for Next SeasonThe CYO will be performing at the renowned Orpheum Theater (home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) on August 1, 2025 and on the Chilliwack Cultural Center Concert Series on August 2, 2025. This short tour, August 1, 2025 (morning departure) to August 3 (return) will be free of charge.
Flight bookings and hotel accommodation need to be confirmed a year in advance. In order to incentivise participation in the tour, a refundable deposit of $250 is to be made to the CYO Society upon acceptance. This deposit is refundable to all students who go on tour. Exceptions for not going on the tour, where the deposit would still be refundable, is acceptance to a summer music program or school program that overlaps with the tour dates, or summer employment with mandatory work between August 1 and 3.
CYO alumni are also invited to join the tour at no cost, if there are spots available in the orchestra. For more information, please email [email protected]

- CYO is open to students aged 14 to 24
- Auditions are not held at any other time during the year
- Playing level for CYO members is a minimum grade 9 level, Royal Conservatory of Music
- It is strongly recommended that applicants take private lessons

- Two contrasting selections (one slow, one fast)
- Excerpts from Mahler's 2nd symphony
- Please bring a copy of your music for the adjudicator
ALL INSTRUMENTS
- The music does not need to be played from memory.
- Please bring a copy of your music to the audition.
- Two contrasting selections (one slow, one fast)
- 3 octave scale and arpeggio; one bow up, one bow down; spiccato – one note per bow (own key choice)
- Double Basses: 3 octave scale, 8 notes per bow; 3 octave arpeggio - 6 notes per bow; spiccato (scale and arpeggio) – one note per bow (own key choice)
- Please bring a copy of your music for the adjudicator
- Two contrasting movements or two contrasting studies (one slow, one fast)
- 2 or 3 (preferred) octave scale and arpeggio: once slurred, once tongued (own key choice)
- Please bring a copy of your music for the adjudicator

- Pieces or studies for the following instruments: timpani, snare drum, xylophone or marimba, cymbals
- Please bring a copy of your music for the adjudicator
- The repertoire for the 2024-2025 season will not include harp.
